Whittier Tech’s New Unweighted Lottery - FAQ’s
Why is Whittier Tech changing its admissions process?
The Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education adopted new regulations this fall requiring vocational-technical schools with a waiting list to use a lottery-based admissions process. Whittier Tech is required to comply with these new rules beginning with mid-year freshman transfers.
What type of lottery will Whittier Tech use?
The Whittier Tech School Committee voted to use an unweighted lottery. This means every student with a completed, on-time application will have one equal chance of being selected.
What counts as a “completed application”?
Applications must include:
A signed application form
Does this lower Whittier Tech’s standards?
No. Admission is just the first step. Once enrolled, students must still meet Whittier Tech’s rigorous academic, technical, attendance, and conduct standards.
What is the application timeline?
Applications: Available November 1, 2025
Deadlines:
Dec. 1 for mid-year grade 9
January 9 for grade 9 fall admissions
February 1 for grades 10 and 11 fall admissions
How many students are admitted each year?
Whittier Tech admits about 330 students per year. Students not selected in the lottery will be placed on a waitlist.
How will families be informed?
Families will be notified of lottery results directly by Whittier Tech. Students offered admission will still need to provide final residency documentation before enrollment.
