A new hive, a new skill, and a hands-on start to something meaningful.
Whittier Adult Education beekeeping students officially began their journey on Saturday, April 18, during a live hive installation at the home of instructor Alison Gilati in Rowley. Under her guidance, 15 students worked together to install thousands of bees into their new hive, gaining firsthand experience in the process.
Dressed in full protective gear, students learned essential techniques, including how to safely handle bees and use a smoker to help keep the hive calm during inspections and honey harvesting. The experience provided a valuable introduction to the care, responsibility, and science behind beekeeping.
Alison, a member of the Essex County Beekeepers Association, brings extensive knowledge and community connection to the program. The association supports beekeepers across Massachusetts through training, events, and educational opportunities, and hosts the largest honey show in North America each year at the Topsfield Fairgrounds.
Whittier Adult Education will offer evening courses again for the 2026–27 school year, with registration opening August 1. Learn more and sign up here: https://wtatnight.whittiertech.org/
