A breakfast filled with gratitude, celebration, and one final tradition.

Recently, Whittier Tech Culinary and Hospitality seniors gathered for their annual senior breakfast, where it was finally their turn to sit back, relax, and be taken care of after years of preparing meals and serving others.

Mr. Boringa, Senior Culinary Arts Instructor, prepared a special breakfast buffet for the Class of 2026, making this year’s gathering especially meaningful as he prepares to retire in June after years of dedication to Whittier Tech students and the Culinary Arts program.

Congratulations to our seniors, and thank you, Mr. Boringa, for the impact you have made on generations of Wildcats. You will be greatly missed.

Young, Vibrant, and Ready to Weld: A Bright Personality and a Future Full of Spark

Devin Taveras Martinez is often the first student in the welding booth during the MassSTEP ESOL Welding Program, and anyone who knows him will tell you his smile shines just as bright as his welds. His welding instructor, Paul Webber, said Devin showed a “fire in his belly” for welding from the very beginning.

Originally from Puerto Rico, 24-year-old Devin faced difficult circumstances during the COVID-19 pandemic, when jobs, opportunities, and training programs were limited. After moving to the United States on his own, he remained determined to build a better future. He found work with companies such as UPS and Amazon, along with landscaping jobs, but he knew he wanted something more meaningful and long lasting. That desire ultimately led him to pursue a hands-on trade in welding.

The MassSTEP ESOL Welding Program, a partnership between Community Action Inc. of Haverhill and Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School, gave Devin the opportunity to develop both his welding skills and English language proficiency. Through impeccable attendance, dedication, and a strong willingness to learn, Devin quickly stood out among his peers.
Through a partnership between Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School and Aerotek, Devin was introduced to Capone Iron Corporation, where he recently earned a full-time position as a MIG welder.

“I really liked the environment, the space, the people, and the type of work,” Devin shared.

At just 24 years old, Devin has already demonstrated a strong work ethic, positive attitude, and determination to succeed. His employer has been impressed by his willingness to learn and confidence in applying his skills. Whittier Tech looks forward to following Devin’s continued success in the welding industry here in Massachusetts.

71.4 pounds of trash removed. One community working together. 🌎

Whittier Tech’s Environmental Club recently led another successful campus cleanup effort, joined by members of the Chess Club and Multicultural Club. Together, students collected more than 71 pounds of trash from around the school grounds, making a visible impact on the campus environment.

The day also highlighted the power of community partnership. Students collaborated with Kristine Kwichoff from the Haverhill Conservation Commission to discuss future opportunities focused on environmental awareness, stewardship, and community involvement.

🐾 Wildcat Wednesday 🐾

This week, we’re featuring Mr. David Charbonneau, a dedicated teacher in Anatomy & Physiology, Kinesiology, and Forensics.
Now in his 13th year at Whittier Tech, Mr. Charbonneau brings curiosity and real-world connections into each of his classrooms, helping students explore the science behind how the body works and how evidence tells a story.

Fun fact: He’s never had a cup of coffee in his life ☕

His advice to students is simple and powerful: “Be excellent to each other.”

Thank you, Mr. Charbonneau, for the impact you make each day at Whittier.

This week, we’re featuring Emily Shea, CAD Drafting Teacher and proud Whittier Tech alum from the Class of 2010. Now in her 12th year of teaching and celebrating her third graduating class at Whittier, Mrs. Shea brings her journey full circle in a meaningful way.

Returning to the program where she once sat as a student, she is passionate about guiding the next generation as they develop design and project management skills while building confidence in their creativity. She values helping students turn ideas into tangible outcomes and takes pride in supporting them as they strengthen their work ethic and prepare for future careers. For Mrs. Shea, it is the curiosity, resilience, and talent of her students that make each day both energizing and rewarding.

Outside of the classroom, Mrs. Shea stays active and creative. She coaches softball and still plays when she can, is a PSIA certified ski instructor, and enjoys gardening, crocheting, reading, and spending time with her two dogs.

Her advice to students is simple and intentional: do everything with grace. Learning takes conscious effort, time, and practice. When you commit to all three, success follows.

Teacher Appreciation Week was made a little sweeter at Whittier Tech thanks to the efforts of Student Government and the generosity of Whittier families and community members. ❤️

As part of Teacher Appreciation Week, Student Government organized several raffles featuring donated gifts for staff members. Among the featured items were beautifully prepared gift baskets created by Maria Santana, parent of Jadiel Polanco, a Grade 9 Electrical student from Haverhill.

Last week, three lucky teachers received these thoughtful gifts:
• Tim Antaya, English
• Fatima Picanso, Cosmetology
• Kayla Yameen Malone, Medical Assisting

Thank you to Student Government for organizing this special appreciation effort and to all who donated gifts and helped celebrate Whittier Tech staff during Teacher Appreciation Week.
