Last week, Whittier Tech welcomed Sue Ellen Monaghan and Jon Claflin to speak with students in the Allied Health and Anatomy and Physiology classes, offering a powerful and deeply personal perspective on organ donation.
Sue Ellen shared the story of her son, Tim, who passed away in 2014 following a workplace injury. Through his decision to be an organ donor, Tim gave the gift of life to others, including Jon, who received his heart. Together, Sue Ellen and Jon spoke with students about grief, healing, and the life-saving impact of organ donation, as well as the medical journey behind transplantation.
Jon is also the father of Whittier Tech alumnus Sam Claflin, Class of 2019, making the visit especially meaningful for the Whittier community.
We are grateful to Sue Ellen and Jon for sharing their story and providing students with a powerful connection between their studies and real-world impact.

Deadline pressure, teamwork, and a story on the line.
Students in Miss Santos' Journalism class took on a newsroom-style challenge during a “Newsroom Escape Room,” where teams worked to recover a scrambled article before deadline. Acting as investigative reporters, students solved a series of challenges to unlock the final publishing code and get the story press-ready.
Along the way, students applied key journalism skills, including identifying parts of an article, organizing content, evaluating quotes and attribution, distinguishing paraphrasing from direct quotes, and building a complete news structure, all through collaboration and problem solving.
A fun and engaging way to bring journalism learning to life.
